The seasons are turning over a new brightly fall-colored leaf, and Long Islanders are in full seasonal mode as we head out for some apple picking. As these 10 terrific L.I. apple-picking locales prove, there’s nothing like visiting our farms and orchards, picking produce and enjoying the local bounty, from apples to cider (some a little harder than others) and lots of pies to apple cider donuts and more baked goods, Plus, it’s always an experience with many orchards and farms offering entertainment, activities and a whole lot of family fun. 

Lewin Farms

This fourth generation family farm has a variety of fields from spring to fall, and the corn maze has a new design that Lewin Farms produces each year themselves. Check out their farm stand, which has ice cream with their own-grown fruit, pies and other baked goods on the weekends. In season now are early varieties of apples, peaches, tomatoes, peppers and eggplant!

Apple picking has officially begun at Harbes. Honeycrisp apples and 27 other varieties are grown at the farm, where the Harbes family (which has been farming for 13 generations) began their L.I.-farming experience during the 1920s. In 1989 Ed Harbes planted a new type of super sweet corn and began selling. When Ed realized people wanted to not only eat fresh produce but also experience picking it themselves, the farm evolved to offer hayrides, corn mazes and ready-to-eat corn, of course.  Check out The Barnyard Adventure, which is a large space where guests can visit farm animals, watch pig races, play games and more!

The family has been farming for over 11 generations, with daughters Jennifer and Amy of John and Evelyn Halsey carrying the tradition of over 350 years. Retail began in 1969 by selling milk, hence the name Milk Pail farms, and moved on to planting apple orchards and selling flowers from their greenhouse as well as helping with garden and planter designs. Check out The Green Gold Kitchen, a food truck with cuisine made by Chef Jose Guzman with fresh local produce and products.

This fifth generation farming family specializes in U-pick produce; pick-your-own peaches, pears, eggplants, potatoes and, of course, apples! There are lots of activities that arise in the fall that are fun for the whole family, from tractor rides to ponies and corn mazes. Enjoy refreshing homemade apple cider, and be sure to check out their preserves, syrups and honey!

“When you’re here, you’re family.” This farm has over 72 acres of land suitable for orchards, private hunting and much more. Thirty of those acres are home to 26 varieties of apples, which are used to make jams, applesauce, whoopie pies and apple butter. Check out Breeze Hill’s market and cafe offering coffee, cider and cider donuts, among other treats!

Be part of the history of 11 generations of family farming on one of the largest farms on the North Fork, with approximately 300 acres—200 of which are all fruit—and featuring the oldest cider mill in the North Fork, built in 1902. Take a wagon ride through the orchard and have a U-pick adventure with a variety of berries, peaches and apples. Check out their farm stands, which were some of the earliest around in the 1940s, for delicious sweet corn, baked goods and more!

U-pick apples, berries and vegetables are available at this interactive farm, as well as fresh baked goods, a farmers market and toy land. Take a unique tractor- and hay-ride, walk corn mazes and try plenty of other activities for children. Cider donuts and candy apples are sure to ring in the autumnal season. Check their Facebook for daily updates on what’s being picked for that day.

Hank and Lynne Kraszewski love creating family memories at Pumpkintown, but they’re not just about the pumpkins. Hank’s has evolved to offer an array of wonderful produce, including those delectable apples.  Check out their famous roasted sweet corn super fun maze, floral greenhouse, wagon rides, baked goods and so much more. Apple picking is on Saturday and Sundays only.

Fruit picking is available daily at this orchard from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Check their website for what’s ready to pick and what will be at the farm stand to purchase each day. The main event is picking, so be prepared to focus on your harvesting skills.

There are a variety of apples at the Woodside Orchard, as well as their famous hard cider, which they’ve been making since 2012, and cider donuts. With two locations—Jamesport, which picks on weekends, and Aqueboque, which picks on Monday, Wednesday and Friday—you have a choice of where to go for fresh cider and favorite hard ciders as well (try dry, sweet, raspberry and, of course, apple). Well-behaved, leashed pets are allowed, but not within the U-pick farms.
