Long Island Weekend: Family Friendly Apple-Picking

Temperatures may be flirting with more spring and summertimes feels, but the calendar says the time is just right for Long Islanders to flock to our local farms for apple picking season. With an eye toward great apple varieties, other pickable fruits and veggies (pumpkins, of course, and even sunflowers), and additional fun family activities, here are our picks (and U Picks) to pick apples with the family this season.

Harbes Family Farm and Orchard 
Location: 698 Sound Ave., Riverhead
Hours: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday and Friday; 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Sunday, and holidays through Oct. 31.
Fee: Packages range from $17 to $28
More: Shizuka, Golden Delicious, Jonagold, Daybreak Fuji, Red Jona Prince, Red Cameo, Crown Empire and Crimson Topaz apples are available for picking. Also check out Harbes Farm in Jamesport, located at 1223 Main Rd., for more apple picking and fall fun.

Hank’s Pumpkintown 
Location: 240 Montauk Hwy., Water Mill
Hours: 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily, apple-picking on Saturday and Sunday only
Fee: $30 to Pick a one-peck bag, a maximum of four people per bag. No charge for children under 3 years of age.
More: If the line of cars isn’t enough to signal your arrival, then the rows of seasonal treats and varieties of apple ciders (and Hank’s Hard Cider, for adults) are a sure sign you’ve arrived.

Wickham’s Fruit Farm
Location:  28700 Main Rd., Cutchogue 
Hours: 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Saturday
Fee: $35 and up 
More: This 300-acre farm is one of the largest farms on the North Fork. Wickham’s is closed on Sundays. More information can be found on the website. 

Woodside Orchards (Jamesport)
Location: 116 Manor Ln., Jamesport
Hours: 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Apple picking on weekdays only. Closed Sundays.
Fee: $20 for 12- to 15-pound bag
More: Consider apple picking at Woodside’s second location at 729 Main Rd., Aquebogue, where apple picking is available weekdays.

Lewin Farms
Location: 812 Sound Ave., Calverton 
Hours: Farm stand open daily 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., except Tuesday. U-pick hours vary by day but are generally open from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. 
Fee: $2.50 per pound with an $8 minimum per adult and $5 minimum for kids ages 5-12.
More: Lewins has plenty of fresh vegetables and fruit for sale, as well as a corn maze open into late fall. Check the website for more information.

Seven Ponds Orchard
Location: 65 Seven Ponds Rd., Water Mill
Hours: 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily
Fee: $22 for a peck bag
More: In addition to rows of apples ranging from Honeycrisp and Golden Delicious to Cortland and more, vegetable picking, hayrides and corn mazes are also available for kids throughout autumn. And the sunflower field is a burst of autumn color not to be missed. 

The Milk Pail 
Location: 1346 Montauk Hwy., Water Mill
Hours: 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Friday, Saturday, Sunday and holidays
Fee: $14 for a 5 lb. bag, $28 for a 10 lb. bag
More: The farm will have its apple and pumpkin-picking services open until the end of October, if not longer. Check the website for regular weather closures.
